[edit] About the Ride
After its debut at Seattle's Pride March on June 26th, 2005, the Body Pride Ride (BPR = "beeper") had clearly raised the bar concerning public nudity at this event. The crowds clearly celebrated our joy of life as they applauded and shared their joy and love with us!
Many women ask individual "beepers" how "beepers" could be naked, but they could not. Event organizers stated "nudity or obscenity" was not permited[1] and that women's nipples must be covered. Simply put, we have been told that being naked is obscene and lewd. It simply isn't true.
- "While many may object to public nudity, under Washington State's 'Indecent Esposure' statutes, it is not a crime." - Ken Bounds, Superintendent, Parks and Recreation, City of Seattle, July 2006
The difference between non-sexualized public nudity and obscene/lewd behaviour may seem subtle, but it is simple too.
It could be as simple as flashing from a kilt or skirt, or lifting a t-shirt to expose breasts. The action is likely intended to alarm, and so might be deemed as lewd or obscene. Simply being nude is not obscene/lewd. There are many factors, including intention, actions, and complaints of being offended.
[edit] Time Line
2008 Sunday June 29 : Body Pride Ride is officially welcomed and recognized as an entry in the PRIDE PARADE downtown. Entry #81. Early Sunday, we'll gather with decorated bikes at a private photo-free zone, paint up, then ride to downtown to our staging area. We are welcome naked by the parade organizers. Do not be lewd/obscene or you may be arrested.
- SOAP President, Eric Albert-Gauthier, says "I have approved your application, with no stipulations. The more people you have as part of your Body Pride Ride, the better! All we ask is that no lewd behavior is displayed." (2008-06-08)
2007 June 23 & 24 : Two rides are planned. A Saturday early morning tour of Capitol Hill ending with participation in the "Raise Your Voice March" on Capitol Hill, and a Sunday morning tour including downtown, and exploring the route of the pride parade downtown. Proposed route segments/maps are posted on yahoo group "links" section.
2006 June 24 & 25 : We planned two rides, Sat & Sun, but only did the one on Saturday. See yahoo group for more details, pictures, and route map.
The participants gathered on private property to get as naked as folks wished to be, and to be painted as much as folks wished to be. The group rode around this fine city of Seattle for about 90 minutes. After we completed the tour, in the Capitol Hill area, a group of riders were welcomed to ride within your "Raise Your Voice March", raising their voices for Body Pride and the power of cycling.
2005 After BPR cycled our way along the parade route for two plus hours, officially as entry #186, we ended our first BRP at Prospect and Broadway, where many police officers and vehicles were staged. We put on some clothing and most ventured into Volunteer Park to enjoy the Festival. There were *no* complaints and no arrests. The ride was a great success!
FYI, the intention is to focus on this wiki as our main resource for BPR information.
